Born and raised in Brazil, Fernando Gotthilf embarked on a remarkable journey that has taken him through unimaginable challenges and moments of triumph. Today, his story is a testament to the power of the human spirit and the unwavering support provided by Beit Halochem.
From Brazil to Israel: Fernando’s Early Years
Fernando’s journey began in São Paulo, Brazil. At the age of nine, his family moved to Miami, seeking new opportunities. But the real turning point came in 2008, when 16-year-old Fernando and his family made Aliya, settling in Ra’anana, Israel. Here, he found a new home and a deep connection to his Jewish roots.
Serving in the IDF: A Life-Altering Mission
Fernando’s dedication to his new country led him to serve in the Special Forces of the Giv’ati Brigade. His commitment and skill earned him a spot in the Squad Commander’s Course. But his life took a dramatic turn in July 2011 during a mission near the Lebanon-Syria border.
While on a mission in the rugged terrain of Har Dov, Fernando’s unit was alerted to the presence of infiltrating terrorists. Following his Company Commander, Fernando led his squad in pursuit. As they moved forward, tragedy struck: Fernando was ambushed. A bullet tore through his side, damaging internal organs and his spine. Instantly, he lost all sensation in his legs below the knees.
The Fight for Survival: A Hero’s Rescue
Injured and bleeding in the harsh terrain, Fernando’s life hung in the balance. A helicopter couldn’t reach him due to the difficult landscape. Instead, his comrades risked everything to rescue him. They carried him on a stretcher through dangerous terrain to a Hummer, which transported him to an ambulance. From there, he was airlifted to Rambam Medical Center.
Fernando’s memories of those moments are vivid: “As my life was hanging in the balance, with devastating wounds, I vividly remember every detail of my team risking their own lives in order to rescue me,” he recalls.
A Painstaking Road to Recovery
Fernando’s journey didn’t end with his rescue—it was just the beginning. He spent two months in intensive care at Rambam, followed by a grueling seven months at Tel Hashomer’s rehabilitation center. During this time, Fernando had to relearn basic skills: getting out of bed, moving to a wheelchair, walking with a walker, then crutches, and finally, a cane.
He remembers the challenges clearly: “Step by step. Rehab requires a lot of dedication, time, and patience,” he says. “You have to put your mind into it … and push through.” Throughout his recovery, his parents were his rock, offering unwavering support.
Today, with custom-made braces and the help of a single cane, Fernando has regained much of his independence. Yet, the journey is far from over—he still battles chronic pain but refuses to let it hold him back.
Beit Halochem: A Beacon of Hope
Once Fernando was discharged from Tel Hashomer, he found a new source of strength and support at Beit Halochem Tel Aviv. The organization became a lifeline for him, offering individualized physiotherapy, hydrotherapy, and access to a state-of-the-art fitness center.
“They pushed me to get me ready for everyday life,” Fernando reflects. “Each day I try to go forward a little more.” At Beit Halochem, he found not only physical rehabilitation but also a community that understood his struggles and celebrated his progress.
Beyond Recovery: Giving Back and Inspiring Others
Fernando’s determination didn’t stop with his physical recovery. Today, he’s in his final year studying Business Administration at the IDC. But more than that, he’s taken on a new role—as a Good Will Ambassador for Beit Halochem. Through appearances at fundraising events, he shares his story and helps raise awareness about the life-changing support Beit Halochem provides to veterans.
Fernando sees his journey as part of a greater narrative, saying, “My story is just one of many Israeli stories.” He uses his platform to thank donors and inspire others to support the critical work that Beit Halochem does.
