Captain Ran Ben Attia’s story is nothing short of extraordinary—a testament to resilience, courage, and the power of determination. Serving as an Operations Officer in the Nahal Brigade during Operation Protective Edge (2014), Ran faced life-threatening injuries that could have ended not only his military career but his dreams. Yet, his journey has been one of triumph over adversity, inspiring countless others along the way.
A Moment That Changed Everything
In the heat of battle during Operation Protective Edge, Ran led his men into one of the notorious underground tunnels in Gaza. While bravely advancing, he was struck by a sniper’s bullet. The shot almost destroyed his hand, pierced his thigh and hip, and ultimately lodged in the delicate nervous system near his spine in the pelvis.
Thanks to the quick response of the Air Force rescue unit, Ran’s life was saved. He was rushed for lifesaving surgeries, and while his injuries were severe, he was informed he would have to live with the bullet in his pelvis for the rest of his life.
But three weeks later, army specialists reviewing his x-rays discovered an urgent complication—the bullet, still lodged in his body, could explode at any moment. Immediate surgery was required, but the procedure would be far from routine.
A Surgery Like No Other
The operation was as delicate as it was dangerous. To avoid triggering the explosives in the bullet, no electronic equipment could be used. A single surgeon, dressed in full protective gear, had to remove the bullet manually—using only a pair of tweezers.
After hours of precision and care, the operation was successful. The bullet was safely extracted, and Ran could finally begin the long and arduous journey of recovery.
Two Years of Rehabilitation and a New Beginning
Rehabilitation was grueling. For two years, Ran faced daily challenges, first walking with two crutches, then transitioning to a cane. It was during this time that he discovered Beit Halochem, where he began rebuilding his strength and confidence at the fitness center.
But Ran didn’t stop there. In August 2016, despite his severe injuries, he set his sights on an almost unthinkable goal: training for an Ironman competition. This intense triathlon involves running, swimming, and cycling a staggering 220 km.
Remarkably, Ran had never cycled or swum competitively before. The only experience he could draw from was his past participation in a few marathons. With the help of his dedicated coach, Ron Shilon, he began training tirelessly.
A Series of Inspiring Achievements
By the end of 2016, Ran had already completed a triathlon. He also participated in the 5-day Courage in Motion bike ride, cycling 100-120 km daily alongside international riders from Canada and the USA.
His resilience extended beyond athletics. Despite the challenges, Ran celebrated personal milestones, including his marriage just before his injury and the birth of his son, Lavie. These moments became powerful motivators, fueling his determination to push through every obstacle.
Pursuing Academic Excellence
Ran’s journey of growth didn’t stop with physical rehabilitation. His thirst for knowledge led him to pursue higher education. Through ZDVO Academic Scholarships, he earned:
- An MA in Public Policy at the Interdisciplinary Center Herzliya.
- An MA in Business Administration from Bar Ilan University.
These academic achievements are further proof of his drive to not only overcome but thrive.
A Testament to Resilience
Through every stage of his recovery, Ran’s family and friends stood by his side, offering constant support and encouragement. They cheered him on through surgeries, rehabilitation, and even across finish lines at triathlons and cycling events.
Today, Capt. Ran Ben Attia is an inspiring example of what it means to face unimaginable challenges with unwavering determination. From the battlefield to the Ironman, from surgeries to academic scholarships, he’s accomplished feats that most people—injured or not—could only dream of.
A Legacy of Strength and Perseverance
Ran’s story reminds us that no obstacle is insurmountable. His journey is not just about survival; it’s about living life to its fullest, no matter the odds. Whether running marathons, earning degrees, or being a loving husband and father, Ran continues to redefine what’s possible.
At Beit Halochem, we’re proud to play a part in his recovery and achievements, providing a space where he and others can heal, grow, and excel. Capt. Ran Ben Attia is proof that the human spirit is unstoppable when fueled by courage, determination, and support.
